Ring In the new

January 2014

Ring out the old, ring in the new
Ring happy bells across the snow
Year is going, let him go
Ring out the false, ring in the true

For all classes except for the first grade we will continue from where we left off.  So much for ringing in the new...But on the other hand I feel as though I can ask the 4th/5th grade class to take home their work.  They are capable of working some at home and remembering to bring their work back to school.  We will try this for 2014.  As far as the other classes we have picked up where we left off and will work in handwork class only.

The 4th and 5th graders next project will be a handwork bag in which they will embroider and stitch together.  Some students are ready for this.

The 2nd and 3rd graders are working on their  knitted flute cases and Lions and Lambs.

The first graders are ringing in the new.  They are learning to cast on and will learn to knit next week.  I am excited for them.  We also are learning to work quietly.  Soon I will bring a story to class for them to listen to while knitting.  How enjoyable does that sound.

Thanks
Ms. Raven

2013 third and fourth grade looking back

2013 is upon us now and the new semester with be filled with knitting socks for the 5/6 th grade.  The First graders will be making their very first knitted stitches while the second graders learn how to purl.  Third and Fourth grade will continue to crochet hopefully they will gain a solid understanding of crochet and someday be able to teach their families how to crochet granny squares.  All that said here is a look back at the third and fourth grade.

2012 projects

Fourth/Fifth grade wrist bands.  We knitted simple wrist bands using double pointed needles before we knitted hats which were also knitted in the round.  Knitting a small simple wrist band was a great introduction to knitting in the round using 4 straight double pointed needles.

Hat photo to come!

Second/Third grade knitted people and saint martin's.
Knitted flat and sewed together.  More to come!

Fall Winter 2011

Well you wouldn't know today that winter is just around around the corner but it is.  The fourth and fifth grade class is preparing for winter by knitting wool hats.  They first are in the process of completing a wrist band in which I introduced knitting in the round on double pointed needles.  I believe they are having a positive experience using double pointed needles.  I am really pround of them.

First grade will begin learning how to knit this winter.  I believe they will be ready soon.  I can't wait to see how much they will enjoy it.

Second and Third grade will be knitting a Saint.  They will knit a person (doll).  They will learn how to purl and how to correctly sew together knitting.

2nd/3rd and 4th/5th have knitted squares so that we may construct a large quilt for the Winter Lite Fair.  They are getting more excited about this.

Hello parents, peers, and friends

It has been a while and we are now coming to the end of the year.  There will be significant changes at Prairie Moon even starting this summer, as I will be conducting camp sessions 2 and 4.  But this another post.  Getting off track here.

Even though we will be experiencing changes one my goals as the handwork teacher is to form a handwork curriculum that can be used by future handwork teachers at Prairie Moon.  The curriculum is based off the Waldorf handwork curriculum and where the children are in their knowledge and abilities in handwork.

This year we have knitted in 1st and 2nd,
knitted and introducing crochet in third and fourth
and knitted, felted, cross stitching in 5th and 6th.

We have knitted small treasure bags, squares, cats and mice, Gnomes and are crocheting small potholders and cross stitching beautiful geometric designs.  I will be changing the curriculum for next year so the children will make and learn something new, and then coming back to this 2010/2011 for 2012/2013 school year subject to a few changes and substitutes.  Suggestions welcome.

OK I hoped that I was able to explain this so that you may understand, questions are welcome.   I would like to share with everyone the patterns for our projects that we have completed and those that we are in the process of completing this year.  As this post was my intention.

I was like a kid today when I found out I didn't have school, Not that I didn't want to see the Prairie Moon kids but I didn't want to have to trek out into the cold.  Enough said, I have been keeping myself busy even with the inclement weather finishing and starting Christmas gifts.  I know Christmas is over!, the gifts I didn't get finished are for those loved ones that live far away and in which I didn't get to see during the holiday break.  Plus my sister was pregnant and had her first baby was born on Monday the 2nd of January!  I just missed him if I would have stayed in Dodge a week longer...but anyhow that gave me time to knit some warm baby socks for him, yes they are a little big for a new born but babies grow so fast.

Made from cotton these little socks will wash and wear well.  The pattern by the way I found on a site called knittinghelp.com there is also a video which helped me along.  I usually have trouble reading patterns at some point, you know how it is either you don't know enough or you know to much!

So the 5th and 6th grade class at Prairie Moon have practicing knitting in the round with dpn (double pointed needles) by knitting a bracelet/cuff.  So their next project socks!  After conquering baby socks I am ready to teach 5th and 6th grade basic sock making!
